Description: This American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification blended learning course provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years. This class is taught in a blended learning format and the assigned online portion(s) must be completed prior to each instructor-led session. The online course takes participants anywhere from 6-8 hours to complete and can be accessed via mobile desktop or tablet.
Prerequisites:
- Minimum age: 15 years;
- Completion of the online portion PRIOR to in-person classes (~6-8 hrs self-paced)
- Passing the pre-session swim test, which includes:
- Swimming 200 yards continuously;
- Treading water for 2 minutes using only the legs;
- Completing a timed event in 1 minute 40 seconds or less: starting in the water, swim 20 yards then surface dive to a depth of 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, then return to the surface and swim another 20 yards back to the starting point, swimming on your back and without hands, where you exit the water without using steps or a ladder.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- This course takes place at a natural hot spring facility with geothermal pools ranging in temperature between 88–94° (warmer than most pools).
- All indoor classroom portions are held in a room with minimal heating, so if our class days fall during a cooler period, please plan accordingly by bringing layers, as well as a warm robe plus extra towels for the pool sessions.
- All participants must bring a bagged lunch plus any snacks you might need for the whole of the day (our location is too far from local eateries/stores to go out to get lunch).
- For all in-class sessions, plan to arrive at least 15–20 minutes ahead of each session in order to allow enough time to park and get situated. We will start promptly.
Tuition + Reimbursements:
For those who gain lifeguard certification and are hired by MORTON'S WARM SPRINGS: for every seasonal contract completed, one year of training fees are reimbursed. As this is a 2-year American Red Cross certification, this means that this training is completely paid for all those completing two seasons at Morton's. Morton's guards in good standing who return for a third season and beyond have all of their Lifeguard renewal certification fees paid fully up front.
