Description
"America’s Mistress" is a musical that tells the story of Victoria Woodhull, a controversial and influential woman of the 19th century that history has purposely tried to ignore. Victoria's audacious nature and eloquent speeches drew both admiration and ire. She started her career as a successful spiritualist, but eventually ran her own newspaper, became the first woman to open a brokerage on Wall Street, and in 1872 became the first woman to run for president. Her platform included women's suffrage, free love, and numerous social reforms that remain relevant today. The story brings to life some of the most famous individuals of the era, including Cornelius Vanderbilt, Henry Ward Beecher, Anthony Comstock, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Victoria’s controversial ideas about sexuality, gender equality and free speech resulted in her being imprisoned several times, but she never stopped working for progressive ideals. Directed by Paige Steadman, and written by Fred Kempner, this will be a chance to shape how this show evolves!
