Join us at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art as John Edwin Mason talks about the relationship between Andrea Morales' work and the history of documentary photography. John Edwin Mason teaches African history and the history of photography at the University of Virginia. His research currently focuses on twentieth-century documentary photography and photojournalism. His next book will be about the great African American photographer, writer, and filmmaker, Gordon Parks. He has previously published books on South African social and cultural history. He is a photographer himself and an avid amateur French hornist.

 

Professor Mason will discuss the relationship between Andrea Morales' work and the history documentary photography. His emphasis will be on the resonance between her photography and that of earlier socially engaged photographers, including Gordon Parks and Roy DeCarava, as well as contemporary photographers, such as LaToya Ruby Frazier.
