Calais Lions

The LIONS acronym also stands for Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations' Safety.[6]

Our own Calais Lions Club was founded in 1940.  Our club has seen many incarnations, but has included members from bag boys to CEO's.  Lions have served our area proudly with the motto "Not above you, not beneath you, but with you."   We have helped in our region in everything from college scholarships to car wrecks.  Our most notable program is our Santa's Helper program which has the honor of running for 50 consecutive years and this year we were noted in the states history annals as the longest running charitable program in the State of Maine.

Not only do we help locally but we also support the Lions global impacts to help with Vision, Hunger, Diabetes, the Environment and Childhood Cancer.

We give quarterly to the food pantry, we have a section of highway which we clean, we support families who are taking their children and family members to and from cancer appointments, we support the local students who with a scholarship program, and we work in collaboration with Sunrise Eye Care to help provide assistance in vision related issues for families.    Our biggest program is our Santa's helper program which gives between 14,000 and 20,000 dollars locally every holiday season to families in need to make sure children have what they need during the holiday season and families can afford a holiday meal.  On top of those initiatives we also help with  a general assistance fund and a summer JD Johnson camp scholarship.

We do all of this and we have fun events.  We raise our funds through our weenie wagon, local business donations, our international festival auction, road tolls, raffles and club dues.

We rely strongly on the fellowship of other local civic organizations; The Red Knights, St. Croix Bowling Club, Spednic Club, The American Legion, and of course our Lady Lioness, with whom none of what we do would be possible.
