Additional information on the Hooks Brothers Photography:

From its founding in 1907 to its closure in 1980, the Hooks Brothers’ studio was the premiere photography business in Memphis, Tennessee, bringing the beauty of black Memphis to the public through their slogan ‘Where There is Beauty, We Take It, Where There is None, We Make It.’ As a black renaissance was burgeoning at the turn of the twentieth century in the American South, Memphis became the haven for establishing many 'firsts' by black entrepreneurs, such as banks, insurance firms, schools, hospitals, barbershops, beauty salons, department stores, and churches, marking a significant milestone in the history of black leadership. For 73 years, the brothers recorded the city’s evolving social and cultural landscapes–framing the charm and mundanity of celebrities and residents in Memphis and passing through the tri-state region (Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee). In portraying everyday people, the Hooks Brothers created portraits of pride, redefining the public image of African Americans in the mid-south.
