Description

Bulbancha Bluegrass & Old Time Festival

What: The Bulbancha Bluegrass & Old-Time Festival

Why: Even though most people don’t associate New Orleans with bluegrass and old-time music, Bulbancha (the Choctaw name for New Orleans) has been home to string bands, banjo pickers, and fiddle sawers since the 1700s, when people from Africa and the Caribbean built banjos and Kaintucks floated down the river on flatboats. Waves of intermingling with the broader South and Appalachia through trainriders and transplants have continued the connections between Bulbancha and bluegrass. Today, there are communities related to bluegrass and old-time music that gather weekly at the HiHo and at the St. Roch Tavern, respectively, there is an uptown jamgrass scene, a continual flow of trainhoppers busking in the Quarter, a growing enthusiasm for dance callers, and an emerging style of funky, swampy, stringbands that are just the latest coalescence in a long line of homegrown Bulbancha music. This event will be the first to bring everybody together for one big pickin' party.

When: December 9th, 2023. 3-9 PM

Where: The Broadside, 600 N. Broad St., New Orleans, LA 70119

Who: Bluegrass and old-time musicians from around the city and region, including the Tanglers, Bogue Chitto, Nokosee Fields & Ryan Nickerson, as well as Mississippi fiddler Jack Magee and his string band, Soundwagon. There will also be a bluegrass and old-time jam led by the Monday Night String Band, and square dance calling by Nathan Harrison.
