Join C. Rose Smith in a deep dive into the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art's collection of the Hooks Brothers Photography Studio. This tour will take you behind the scenes and give you a glimpse into the realm of a curatorial team.
C. Rose Smith, who joined the MBMA in 2023 as the Assistant Curator of Photography, is crucial in sharing the museum’s nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first-century photography holdings with the public. Through exhibitions, workshops, and collection-led tours, Smith ensures that the public is not just an audience but an integral part of the museum's mission. Smith's expertise lies in the preservation and curation of nineteenth and early twentieth-century photography. Her extensive experience includes organizing preservation projects for over 5,000 photography objects and contributing to rotating permanent collections exhibitions. Prior to her tenure at the Brooks Museum, Smith held key positions at Boston University Libraries and the George Eastman Museum, where she managed a digital repository of photography and works on paper, and co-managed a collection of photographs by renowned twentieth-century photographer Nickolas Muray, respectively. Smith's academic qualifications include an MFA in Photography and Related Media from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a Certification in the Care and Identification of Photographs from Gawain Weaver Art Conservation, and a BFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
All exhibitions at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art are underwritten by the MBMA Exhibition Fund. Major annual support is provided by Kay Clark and Maggie and Milton Lovell, with generous annual funding from Anonymous, Gloria and Kenneth Boyland, Holly and Paul T. Combs, Deborah and Bob Craddock, Michael and Maria Douglass, Eleanor and William Halliday, Debi and Galen Havner, Buzzy Hussey and Hal Brunt, Jay and Kristen Keegan, the Doris S. and Hubert Kiersky Charitable Remainder Trust, Carl and Valerie Person, and Bill Townsend.
