D. Colin is a multidisciplinary artist of Haitian descent. Her creative practice focuses on poetry, visual art and theater. Although she grew up in Connecticut, she has called New York's capital region home since 2007. With an educational background in English and Africana Studies, she is a teaching artist and curator facilitating space for creativity and healing.
She has performed for The Moth, PBS, Write About Now, NPR and has toured both nationally and abroad. Her poetry has appeared in Trolley Literary Journal, Ink & Nebula, Scarlet: A Literary Journal and Porter Gulch Review among others. Her one-woman show Simone appeared at Capital Rep Theater in 2019. She is the author of Dreaming in Kreyol and a limited print collection titled, Said the Swing to the Hoop. She is also a VONA and Cave Canem alum as well as a New York State Writers Institute fellow.
Her art has been shown at Albany Center Gallery, the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Spring Street Gallery, Albany International Airport and the Underground Railroad Education Center among others. As a visual artist, she mostly works with acrylics on canvas but also creates collage, murals and mixed media art. She is the co-owner of bohemiAfrique, a collaborative arts venture with Robert Cooper.
She was awarded the 2022 Excellence in Arts & Letters Award from UAlbany. In her spare time, she enjoys caring for her plants, perusing through used bookstores and being by the water, preferably crystal clear. Named Resourceful Woman in the Arts in 2019, she believes in Nina Simone's words that "an artist's duty is to reflect the times" and often says, "if the art didn't move you, then I didn't do my job."
