Concordia Music Competition 

Location: Borland-Manske Center Charlie (Music)

            1530 Concordia West, Irvine, California, 92612 

Competition Date: Saturday & Sunday, January 27th & 28th, 2024 
    (We will assign a specific date and time to each participant after the application period is closed)

As the registration deadline approaches, we are in the process of finalizing the schedule. 
The Piano category is scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 28th, while all other instruments and vocal categories will be held on Saturday, January 27th. 
We understand that scheduling conflicts may arise. Contestants unable to participate on January 27th or 28th will be accommodated accordingly. 
As we near the end of the registration period, we will provide the final schedule, ensuring the best possible arrangements for all participants.

Application Deadline 

  • General : Wednesday December 27, 2023
  • Late : Friday January 5th, 2024

Application Fee ( non- refundable) :  

  • General Application : $70 for soloists 
                                          $50 per ensemble member 
  • Late Application :  $ 80 for soloists 
                                     $ 60 per ensemble member 

Categories

- Instruments : Piano, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double bass, Oboe, Bassoon, Flute, 
                                Clarinet, Horn, Trumpet, Tuba, Trombone, Saxophone, Percussion 

- Voice : Classical and Musical Theater 

- Chamber ensemble: Any chamber ensemble group, from duo to octet.

 

Division
 

A-1 Age 7 & under 
A-2 : Age 8
A-3: Age 9
A-4: Age 10 
B: Age 11  
C: Age 12
D: Age 13
E : Age 14
F: Age 15
G :Age 16
H :Age 17
I : Age 18 
J : College : Age 19 to 24 (College) 
K : Age over 25 

All instruments will compete in separate categories based on both instrument type and age. 
For instance, an 11-year-old violinist will compete within the 11-year-old violinist category.

Repertoire
Instruments : Free choice of one piece 

  •  Division A, B, C, D  : 5 mins limit

 Division E, F, G, H, I, J , K  : 6 mins limit 
(If your piece exceeds the time limit, the teacher can make the cut. If not, the judges will. Sometimes, they might listen longer than the limit if time allows.)

 Voice:  - Classical : One Art Song and One Operatic Aria 
              - Musical Theater : Two Musical Theater Pieces 


Awards

  • First prize : Trophy + $200 scholarship to CUI Summer Chamber Music Festival, 2024  -(only for instrumentalists)

* For chamber ensembles, each member will receive a $200 scholarship for CUI Summer Chamber Music Camp, 2024 (only for instrumentalists )

  • Second prize : Trophy + $100 scholarship to CUI Summer Chamber Music Festival, 2024. (only for instrumentalists )

* For chamber ensembles, each member will receive a $100 scholarship for CUI  Summer Chamber Music Camp, 2024  (only for instrumentalists )

  • Third prize : Trophy 
  • Fourth prize : medal
  • Honorable mention: medal 

Complete Guidelines

  1. Age is determined by the date of the competition, January 27th, 2024  
    The applicant has to submit a proof of age (a copy of driver’s license, birth certificate, etc.).
  2. Ensemble category participants are entered by the age of the oldest student as of January 27th, 2024.
  3. All participants must provide a copy of the score for the chosen piece to the judges at the time of the competition.
  4. Each participant has to provide his/her own accompanist.
  5. Participants may use the music.
  6. The judges’ decisions are final.
  7. All participants will receive the comments from judges.
  8. All participants beside the winners will receive a certificate of participation.
  9. All winners agree to allow their names, photographs and video files to be used in connection with the competition as publicity for Concordia Summer Chamber Music Festival.
  10. Please note that only the contestants' teachers, family members, and friends are permitted to observe their performance.
