Who and what do we choose to honor in public spaces? Whose stories are told—and whose are left out?
In this hands-on workshop, participants will design monuments that celebrate liberation, resilience, and overlooked histories. Led by M21D and MODA, this interactive session invites you to imagine the monuments you want to see in the world and have a voice in what is remembered in your community.
Through discussion, design, and creative making, you’ll:
- Explore the role of monuments in shaping history and collective memory.
- Identify people, movements, and moments that deserve recognition.
- Discussing what liberation, resilience, and overlooked histories meant each of us.
- Use paper, clay, paint, and other materials to build a model of your own monument.
- Present your vision and reflect on the power of public memory.

MODA x M21D: Reimagining the Future Through Design
From February 20–23, MODA and M21D are co-hosting a series of visionary events exploring how design can shape a more just and equitable future. These interactive experiences invite participants to rethink the role of objects, storytelling, and cultural institutions in a rapidly evolving world.

Accessibility: Designers with different styles of learning or special needs are welcome in MODA public programs. We will be able to most effectively help everyone learn and enjoy this experience if we know about those needs in advance of the program. Cancellation Policy: MODA reserves the right to cancel a program if the minimum enrollment requirements are not met, but don't worry: should MODA have to cancel, we will gladly issue a full refund to all registrants. If you need to cancel your plans for any reason, we kindly request that you notify us at least 7 days prior to the event start. By doing so, we can process a refund for the ticket cost (minus a small $10 processing fee per class). Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made less than 7 days before an event.
