Description

Sonic Essence and The Fruit are pleased to present a brand new edition of Detroit-Durham Connection that celebrates the soul of Detroit, bringing us back to the heart and soul of techno itself, featuring none other than the legendary John "Jammin" Collins of Underground Resistance to guide our sonic journey.

This edition of Detroit Durham Connection is being brought to you in partnership with Tec-Troit Electronic Music Festival, a free electronic music festival celebrating Detroit's electronic music heritage. Tec-Troit will be taking place June 10-11, 2023.

Last year, we brought four veteran DJ's from the Detroit scene who truly embody the spirit and soul of Detroit techno. We followed this up with a celebration of the contributions of BIPOC femme and nonbinary artists in the electronic scene. In January, we highlighted the booty music era of Detroit. This iteration of DDC will have the soul of Detroit on full display, highlighting the sound of Techno Soul.

FEATURED DETROIT TALENT

JOHN "JAMMIN" COLLINS: With decades of experience as a DJ, producer, radio host, community organizer, booking agent and curator, no one represents Detroit’s globally-renowned music scene like John “Jammin” Collins. From witnessing the birth of Detroit techno to being a longtime member of the legendary Underground Resistance collective, Collins has touched every corner of Detroit’s rich dance music scene and continues to serve as one of the best musical ambassadors the city has to offer.

Growing up on a mix of funk, jazz, soul and gospel, music has always been a central component of Collins’ life. He got his first experience playing records at his alma mater, Wilberforce University, but never considered himself a DJ until he began picking up gigs around Detroit for supplemental income. Playing everything from Cerrone and Sylvester, to Mr. Fingers and Barbara Tucker, to Juan Atkins, Collins had a unique vantage point into the genesis of Detroit’s local electronic music scene as he was one of the leading DJs playing “progressive” music, the progenitor to both house and techno.

Collins is a living monument to the past, present and future of Detroit’s dance music. His distinct DJing style and impeccable musical knowledge has kept him in high demand, with a tour schedule that has never been busier, and crowds that have never been more diverse. With new music forthcoming on Underground Resistance and a handful of Collins’ acclaimed DJ edits in the release pipelines of legendary labels, there’s no sign of Collins slowing down as a champion of Detroit’s unparalleled house and techno scene.

SOMETHING BLUE: Sharing the stage, we look forward to welcoming Something Blue, who represents the vitality of Detroit's modern music scene. Born and raised in Detroit, Something Blue brings their city’s rich culture and authenticity into every musical performance. Something Blue masterfully demonstrates the power and importance of honoring Detroit's sonic legacy through their cross-genre and meticulously curated sets.
