Drinking History: An Evening with Dr. Frank B. Smith, Magnetic Physician

Animal Magnetism? Mesmerists? Science? Quakery? Cures? Drinking History brings you to the Troy home and office of Dr. Frank B. Smith in the year 1891. You will be part of an intimate audience for an interview with the doctor, one of the top magnetic physicians in the country, as he reflects on his profession and his successes in treating patients. Delve into the fascinating world of the science and suspicion that surrounded Dr. Frank B. Smith who took his practice around the country, curing ailments and challenging the field of medicine.

This program features an interview with Dr. Frank B. Smith (portrayed by actor Ted Phelps) and John Delconte, researcher and content specialist. Kathy Sheehan, Troy City and Rensselaer County Historian, will discuss the history of physicians like Dr. Smith, spiritualists, and the burned-over districts of New York during the Gilded Age. Ticket purchase includes a special themed cocktail and light refreshments.

The Hart Cluett Museum Drinking History series brings people together to explore the history of Rensselaer County, outside of the museum. Deep dives, hot takes, and drinks for all!
