Description

Every Child Matters Day, also known as Orange Shirt Day or National Truth and Reconciliation Day, is a day of remembrance and acknowledgement in the United States and Canada of the systemic abuses, generational trauma, and cultural erasure policies of the residential school system on Indigenous and First Nations communities. Visit Niagara University's website for further information and additional resources.

Learn more about the history and lasting impact of residential schools on Indigenous communities through a pop-up exhibition at CAM (09/30-10/06) and drop-in programs and installations throughout Niagara University campus.

Pop-Up Exhibition | Castellani Art Museum (Main Gallery): Reckon with the history of the Thomas Indian School (TIS), a state and federally funded residential school in Irving, New York that was in operation from the mid 1800s through 1957. This exhibition features a selection of interpretive content curated by Dr. Lori Quigley (Seneca Nation, Wolf Clan), historic artifacts and ephemera, and select images from a 2021 photo essay about the generational impact of the school on the community by Hayden Haynes (Seneca Nation, Deer Clan) featuring Jocelyn Jones (Seneca Nation, Wolf Clan).

Handprints for History | Lower Level Gallagher Center (Multipurpose Room): Participate in the Handprints for History activity outside of the Multipurpose Room in the Gallagher Center. This activity educates about the history of residential boarding schools and their impact on Indigenous communities. To show solidarity, participants will stamp their handprints for display using orange paint. Each participant will be given an opportunity to share something they learned or felt upon learning the history and importance of the Every Child Matters Day.

Orange Flag Installation | O'Shea Residence Hall Lawn, Varsity Drive (Between Varsity Village and Dunleavy Hall): An orange flag-placing activity will occur on the Niagara University lawn in front of O’Shea Residence Hall, between Varsity Village and Dunleavy Hall. The community-made flag installation will occupy our lawn as a visual reminder and temporary monument to the history and legacy of residential schools. The NU community and the public are welcomed to participate by adding flags into the lawn as a symbolic gesture and memorial that will remain in place over the course of the week.

The Castellani Art Museum (CAM) at the center of the Niagara University campus is dedicated to the enjoyment and educational potential of artistic creativity. As a major resource for the visual arts in Niagara County, the CAM's permanent collection includes over 5,000 pieces of mainly modern and contemporary art, and hosts a unique Folk Arts Program supporting traditional artists and community-based cultural traditions in the Buffalo-Niagara region.

In keeping with Niagara University's Vincentian mission, the museum recognizes and serves the diverse racial, ethnic, and religious communities of the Niagara region through the organization and presentation of exhibitions which honor and explore their artistic traditions and contemporary output. In addition to presenting diverse artistic expressions, the museum works in partnerships to explore and redefine the relationship between the museum and its constituencies.

As a university museum, the Castellani Art Museum serves the educational needs of the community,  by working with Niagara University faculty on integrative learning projects for college students and providing art education programs for area schools and cultural organizations. The museum staff works with educators to develop art-based learning programs that help to promote critical thinking.
