Description

Join us on Wednesday 29 March for a talk about Ushaw's agricultural estate.

This talk presents an interim report on research carried out last year using the archives held at Ushaw and elsewhere. It will examine the operation of the agricultural estate which was held and managed by the Ushaw over a period of some 175 years: this will include descriptions of the individual farms which made up the estate in County Durham and beyond.

The decision to cease direct farming operations in the early 1970s will be considered, along with the original aim of self-sufficiency in meat and dairy products necessary to feed the Ushaw residents.

Dr Alan Wadsworth was a Durham Residential Research Library Fellow in 2022 and this Fellowship enabled access to the archives held at both Ushaw and Palace Green Library in Durham. As a Yorkshire farmer’s son and now the leader of a project in Worcestershire to record and research farm buildings, Alan has a strong interest in agricultural history across the country.
