NAFSMA Mentoring Session in Partnership with the California Central Valley Flood Control Association – Flood Evacuation and Real Time Forecasting - February 26 & 27th, 2025

Flood Evacuation and Real Time Flood Forecasting is a life-or-death issue. In many regions, evacuation decisions cross many disciplines. Often there are too many disciplines involved to ensure a community is prepared.  Flood management agencies may have the best information on the risk of flooding - where flood waters are likely to go, and how long they may take to get there. Departments of Transportation may have the best information on the capacity of roads and the best way to route people, assuming all roads are available. Cell phone companies can warn large numbers of people, but often lack the ability to send their messages to very specific locales, or to share clear messages of evacuation routes depending on locale. Offices of Emergency Services and First Responders are often forced to try to meld all this information together, in emergency situations, into a plan that can save lives. In some cases, the connections needed to perform effectively in an emergency may not exist until the emergency has already started.

In partnership with the California Central Valley Flood Control Association, the National Association of Flood and Stormwater Management Agencies (NAFSMA) will convene a cross-discipline mentoring session on flood evacuation and advance in real time forecasting is scheduled for February 26 and 27, 2025 at the Doubletree in Sacramento.

The organizations will bring together flood managers, city and county officials, emergency service professionals from the State and county level, as well as first responders, to learn from the lessons of others and gain insight into how to prepare and manage flood evacuations. The second day will focus on success stories of real time forecasting and discussing where public agencies need to go with this technology to reduce risk for our communities.

The one and half day meeting will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sacramento, 2001 Point West Way, Sacramento, CA 95815.  The event room rate is $150 (plus taxes) and available at this rate until February 1st, 2025, use this DoubleTree link to book.
