There will be 4 different workshops offered through 2023:
Face Jugs – April 22, 10 AM-12 NOON
There are examples of face jugs in many world cultures. The form we will be exploring is
popular in the American South. Face Jugs were created by enslaved potters and the form
became popular with southern folk potters. The earliest examples were used as grave markers.
The ugliest faces would “frighten the devil away form the grave so the soul could escape to
heaven.” A popular explanation for ugly face jugs among later folk potters was to frighten
children away from a jug of alcohol. The jug forms will be pre-made & you create the features &
handle with LF’s assistance. The signed pieces are bisqued and glazed fired at Hazelwood
Pottery.
Garden Gnomes – June 10, 10 AM – 12 NOON
The kitchy garden gnome has a little-known history. The word Gnome is thought to be derived
from the Greek word Genome meaning earth dweller, a term for mythological beings
protecting crops, gardens & buried treasure. These pieces will be hand built during the
workshop with LF’s assistance. Participants will select the glaze & beard colors. The gnomes will
be bisqued & glaze fired at Hazelwood Pottery.
Jack o’ Lantern Luminary - September 30, 10 AM – 12 NOON
Create a permanent Pumpkin! Each participant starts with a wheel thrown clay form provided
by LF. We will add the stem, cut the top into a lid, and add the scary traditional jack o’ lantern
face. Or, you can made a pattern of cut-out shapes around the clay pumpkin to create a
luminary for the entire Fall season. The jack o’ lanterns will be bisqued & glaze fired at
Hazelwood Pottery.
Christmas Tree Luminary - November 11, 10 AM – 12 NOON
Create a family Christmas heirloom. We will slab form the conical tree body and make a pierced
pattern for candlelight to glow through. You can add a star on top for Christmas or a little bird
on top to use into the New Year. The trees will be bisqued & glaze fired at Hazelwood Pottery.
Instructor Bio: I fell in love with clay as a little girl at Mark of the Potter - an historic north
Georgia gallery on the Soquee River. I trained at University of Georgia during exciting New
Wave music days, was a resident artist at the Visual Arts Center of Alaska, and re-honed my
skills at Haywood Community College in Western North Carolina. I love making pots for daily
use. A good mug for coffee, a generous bowl for bringing food to the table, a great platter for
sharing the main course and a small snack plate are equally delightful to create and offer for
your use.
