Description
This is a free, 10-12-week course that will give participants an introduction to food systems and their impact on communities and the environment both locally and around the world. The course is a new collaboration between Free University Brighton and Brighton and Hove Food Partnership.
We will begin by exploring the agricultural history of South East England and the state of our nation's food system today before examining some of the key issues such as hunger, barriers to a healthy diet, the environmental impact of food systems and food resilience.. We will then take a look at how food activists are influencing food policy and working to fix food systems at a local and national level. The course will be facilitated by academics, experts, campaigners and activists.
Time and Dates: 7-9pm Wednesday evenings starting 17th January, 2024.
Venue: Community Base Conference Room, 5th floor of the South Wing. 113 Queens Road, Brighton. BN1 3XG. (South Wing entrance is opposite the 99 Supermarket)
This course is aimed at residents of Brighton and Hove. No prior knowledge of food systems is required.
Course Aims and Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Define a food system at a local, national and global level
- Describe some of the key issues and challenges of the current food system and how they could be addressed
- Develop an evidence-based view of the food system and its issues and challenges
- Define what is a healthy, sustainable diet and some of the barriers
- Understand how a city like Brighton and Hove could feed itself more sustainably
