Brahms - Violin Concerto

Joelle Crigger, violin

Dvorak - Symphony #9 (From the New World)

This concert features two Romantic masterpieces: Brahms' Violin Concerto and Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 (From the New World).

Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major is a cornerstone of the violin repertoire, blending technical brilliance with emotional depth. The first movement showcases grandeur and passion, the second movement offers serene beauty with a lyrical oboe melody, and the fiery finale bursts with Hungarian-inspired dance rhythms.

Dvořák's New World Symphony, inspired by his time in America, combines Bohemian folk influences with themes evoking the American spirit. Its sweeping melodies, including the iconic "Largo," and vibrant rhythms capture a sense of nostalgia, exploration, and hope, making it one of the most beloved symphonies of all time.

Toronto-based violinist Joelle Crigger has served as concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and as guest concertmaster for the North York Concert Orchestra. She has performed as a soloist with the Oakville Chamber Orchestra, the North York Concert Orchestra, the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Burlington Symphony Orchestra.

An avid chamber musician, Joelle travelled to France earlier this year, where her quartet debuted Ehwa Hong's Nuit Polychrome during the New Music Festival at the Conservatoire de Lyon. A highlight of her musical career was playing Andrew Norman's Gran Turismo with the TSO Chamber Soloists as part of an octet led by virtuoso violinist James Ehnes at Roy Thomson Hall. A versatile musician, Joelle is well-versed in playing a variety of fiddle styles and is a past winner of the Canadian Open Junior Fiddle Championship. She was honoured to receive the 2023 Stingray Rising Stars Award.

A recipient of numerous scholarships including the President’s Scholar of Excellence, Joelle recently completed her undergraduate studies in Violin Performance at The University of Toronto, where she studied with Jonathan Crow. She is currently pursuing her graduate studies as a full scholarship student at the Glenn Gould School of Music, where she studies with Paul Kantor and Barry Shiffman.

North York Concert Orchestra

North York Concert Orchestra, now in our 50th season, is a semi-professional orchestra of capable, committed musicians dedicated to bringing affordable, live classical music to our North York community.

Many of our musicians are music professionals – most, though, have occupations far removed from music. We come from a multitude of ethnic backgrounds. While many of us were not born in Canada, the international language of music brings us together – we strive to share the love of music with you, our audience, and to enrich your lives.

While we focus our endeavours on our public concert series, we do not forget those less able to attend our concerts. Many of our musicians volunteer to collaborate in small ensembles, bringing chamber music to community centres, schools and seniors’ residences.

Our annual youth concerto competition is a showcase for young emerging artists, giving them a rare opportunity to perform with a full-size orchestra.

NYCO attracts a diverse and talented membership of over fifty musicians whose ages span over six decades. We are complemented by a volunteer concert production team. A professional music director and professional string section leaders provide the guidance, training and inspiration for us to achieve excellence.
