HAPA amazed the music world in 1993 with their groundbreaking debut album “HAPA” which swept all 6 categories it was nominated for at the 1994 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, creating what would go on to become the number one selling recording by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian Music. "HAPA" was acknowledged by Honolulu Magazine as #31 of the “50 All-Time Greatest Hawaiian Recordings of All Time,” along with the song “Lei Pikake,” composed by Barry Flanagan and Hawaiian language professor, Stanley Herbert Kī'ope Raymond, being acknowledged as #32 in the follow-up “50 All-Time Greatest Hawaiian Songs” issue.
Barry Flanagan, one of the founders of HAPA, has composed some of Hawaii's most popular songs of the last three decades, and has a huge following for his guitar-playing and vocal performances. Today’s HAPA consists of Flanagan and Kenneth Makuakane, another legendary, prolific songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who is a recipient of the prestigious Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts Lifetime Achievement Award
