Description
The Asheville Museum of History is excited to announce our three-part 2023 Cemetery Series. Register for individual events, or all three at a discount. The first tour, Wednesday, August 30 from 10AM – 1PM takes place near Rutherfordton, North Carolina. (This event is now sold out but a waitlist ticket option is available).
Founded in 1768, Brittain Presbyterian Church was the first established congregation in the WNC foothills. Its graveyard has some of the oldest burials of settlers in our region, including numerous veterans of the American Revolutionary War. We will explore settlement in this region, conflict, and burial and religious practices. A few miles away, nine Loyalists (fighters for the British during the American Revolutionary War) were hanged in 1780 at the Biggerstaff farm. Here we will explore the site where the executions are believed to have been conducted and several of the deceased buried.
