History Hike Series: Saturday, June 14th - L.B. Good Memorial Park (Indian Island)
Back by popular demand, this History Hike is a repeat of the 2022 hike that started our History Hikes programming! Join us on a walk along the trail on the north side of the portage canal and discuss the tumultuous history of Oak Bay and Indian Island. We'll begin with the archaeological history of Indian Island and explore the implications of the Hudson Bay Company’s punitive mission against the S’Klallam that resulted in the destruction of a village at this location in 1828, as well as what we know about the more recent ebb and flow of human history in this area.
- Pre-registration required.
- Approximately 90 minutes.
- Approximately 1 mile total on a gravel trail with few inclines.
- This tour is offered at 10am and 12:30pm.
About David Brownell
David Brownell holds a BA in History from Hanover College and an MA in Public History from Wright State University. After serving as Research Coordinator for the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office, David moved to Washington in 2015 to take a position as Cultural Resources Specialist for the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, and in 2018 he was designated as Jamestown’s Tribal Historic Preservation Officer by Tribal Council. In the fall of 2021, he became Executive Director of the North Olympic History Center. David serves on the board for the Jefferson County Historical Society.
About History Hikes:
Each year, North Olympic History Center Executive Director David Brownell provides guided hikes at historically significant sites around the North Olympic Peninsula. This program is coordinated by the Jefferson County Historical Society. This year we are offering three different hikes:
- Saturday, May 31st: Dungeness Recreation Area
- Saturday, June 14th: L.B. Good Memorial Park (Indian Island)
- Saturday, September 20th: Clink Bridge on the Dungeness River
General Info:
- Two time slots per date
- Each hike is approximately 90 minutes
- Pre-registration required
- Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the site
- Capacity: 12 people per hike
- Program cost is $45 for JCHS or NOHC members, $60 for non-members. Funds from History Hikes help support the work of both the North Olympic History Center and the Jefferson County Historical Society.
