Description

Join us on Thursday, June 5th, from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Asheville Museum of History (AMoH) for a special History Hour program: Asheville’s Tuberculosis Tourism Era, with David O. Freedman, M.D. Light refreshments will be available.

Asheville’s rapid growth and wealth prior to the Great Depression was based on its reputation as a wellness destination that began in 1870. The very lucrative Tuberculosis Sanitarium Era was followed by vigorous efforts to promote Asheville as a healthy place for healthy people that were led by the Vanderbilts and Grove. Many current buildings, such as Blue Ridge Public Radio (BPR), sit on the locations of former tuberculosis (TB) sanitariums. Efforts to control spitting in the early 1900s were comical.
