Description
Join us at the Asheville Museum of History on Wednesday, July 24th at 6:00 PM for a special lecture from decorative arts scholar and curator Katie Burlison on the history of the Arts & Crafts style in Western North Carolina. This event is in-person at the Asheville Museum of History, located in the Smith-McDowell House at 283 Victoria Road, Asheville, NC 28801. Light refreshments will be provided.
Katie Burlison, decorative arts historian and Curator at Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses in New Orleans, will discuss some of the reasons why Western North Carolina became a center for the Arts & Crafts Movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, how local expressions of the style differed from those in other places, and what types of buildings and furnishings the style was most applied. Her presentation will feature well-known local architecture (including the Grove Park Inn and other resorts) and designs, extant examples of Arts & Crafts furnishings, and will highlight designers and craftsmen of the movement.
Katie Burlison is a decorative arts historian and Curator at Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses in New Orleans. She is passionate about historic preservation, decorative arts and architectural history, and interpreting the lives of people in the 19th century American South, especially those who have been left out of the traditional historical narrative. Katie holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and an M.A. from the Bard Graduate Center in New York City. She recently curated the exhibition Artistry in Iron: Blacksmiths of New Orleans, which received a 2022 Leadership in History award from the American Association for State and Local History. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and two dogs. Since the 1980s, Katie has been enjoying WNC summers at Kanuga in Hendersonville with her family. Kanuga’s recent inn renovation and preservation of original furnishings sparked her interest in the material culture there–particularly the furniture and buildings in the Arts & Crafts Style.
