Description

Join National Park experts from the Homestead National Historic Park in this online, interactive event for a focused look at how the Homestead Act of 1862, shaped Jefferson County, drew millions to the United States and forever changed the land long-inhabited by indigenous cultures. You'll also learn how to research the origins of your property or that of your ancestors.

The Homestead Act of 1862 built our nation, with 270 million acres homesteaded by men, women, immigrants and formerly enslaved people. The land, long inhabited by indigenous cultures, changed forever. National Park representatives will share the history of the Act, how land was claimed and who settled in our great nation. We'll also share maps of homesteads in our area and teach you how to research the origins your property or find out if your ancestors were homesteaders.  We'll explore how homesteading documentation can further genealogy research and teach you how to access and utilize federal land records, maps, case files, and other documents related to receiving public domain land from the General Land Office.

After registering you'll receive a personalized Zoom link to attend the event.

Conifer Historical Society & Museum

Mission

The Mission of the Conifer Historical Society and Museum is to share the region's legacy by collecting, preserving and exhibiting historical and cultural materials.

Background Statement

One day, a group of Conifer residents was sitting around the dinner table together and the topic of history came up. "Do you remember who used to live on that house way down on Kuester Road? What about that old Cemetery off Pleasant Park Road? Do you know anything about that?" And so the discussion went, and The Conifer Historical Society and Museum was born. Incorporated in January 2009, we have grown and now call the former Conifer Junction Schoolhouse our home. Our purpose now is to share the region's legacy by collecting, preserving and exhibiting historical and cultural materials and provide public access to services, collections, exhibits and a research library.
