Description

Making the jump into creating abstract art can be intimidating for a lot of people. This introduction to abstract art will focus on reframing what drawing from observation means, as a way to make that first step a bit easier.

With this approach to abstract art, we will relate emotionally to the shapes that we see, and then translate those emotions into the foundation of our image. We will be doing this with a variety of activities, starting with creating characters from simple cutout shapes and then moving into a couple activities involving a still life. Finally we will take all of that knowledge to develop a single visually abstract image in the final session while getting focused and individualized feedback.

Our primary mediums will be pencil, pen, and graphite, though we may make the leap into other mediums depending on student interest. Throughout each of these activities, we will also be looking at the work of a range of different artists and have group discussions and short lectures to get a better understanding of different approaches to abstraction vs observation.

This class takes place over three days from September 29 - October 1 from 11 am - 1 pm each day.

All materials are provided. You are welcome to bring your sketchbook, though it is not required. This class is recommended for students 16 and up.

Joseph is an artist who uses organic shapes to create both figurative and abstract work. They use the shapes found within nature and within the people they know as a way to explore relationships and identity. Her work is often experimental and and conceptual but is rooted in the love of observation. See more on instagram @sanjay_artpage.
