One ticket gets you into both events, two for the price of one! Both shows start at 7:30 p.m. Ticketholders are welcome to attend one or both shows under the same ticket. Please make sure you have a receipt/ticket (digital or hard copy) for one or both events.

Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m.: Kirkwood's Student Jazz Combo opens, and Kirkwood's Jazz Ensemble headlines!
Saturday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m.: Kirkwood's Student Pop Combo opens, and the CR Jazz Ensemble headlines!
Both shows are directed by Christopher Navarrete, Director of the Instrumental Music Program at Kirkwood Community College.
Christopher Navarrete is a trumpeter, teacher, and composer from Northern California. Director of Instrumental Music Program at Kirkwood Community College, he shares a passion for music education, classical and jazz performance, interdisciplinary studies, music scholarship, and instrumental conducting. He has earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music with emphasis’ in Music Education, Music Performance, and Jazz Studies, and a Single Subject Teaching Credential from California State University of Chico. From the University of Northern Colorado, he has earned Master of Music Degree in Music Performance and Jazz Studies, as well as working towards completing his Doctor of Arts Degree in Jazz Studies with a secondary in Jazz Composition. He will be completing his degree at the conclusion of this semester.
As a musician he is passionate about performing music both in the classical and jazz idioms. In 2022 he recorded his jazz album Stepping Forward, as well as recording as a sideman on albums: “Rumba Pa Sanen” with the Walter JazzOrchestra, “Behind the City” with the Chang Su Orchestra, “Infancia” with the Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra, the “Romeo and Juliet Project” with the University of Northern Colorado Lab Band I, and “Enter Autumn” with the David Caffey JazzOrchestra.
In addition to his teaching and scholarship experiences he has served as the CMEA Region III Honor Band Director, adjudicator for various CMEA Festivals in the Northern California region, clinician and adjudicator for the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival, Director of the Chico Jazz Festival, Jazz Aspen-Snowmass Honor Band Director, and has 10+ years working as an instructor and manager at the Jazz in the Sangres Summer Camp for the Colorado Conservatory for the JazzArts. He currently resides in Cedar Rapids with his lovely wife Becky and dog Reggie.

This performance will be held at Ballantyne Auditorium on Kirkwood Community College’s campus, located at 6301 Kirkwood Blvd SW, Cedar Rapids. Enter campus at the southwest entrance, at the corner of Kirkwood Blvd. SW and Tower Rd. SW. Travel east on Tower Rd. SW, and take a left to stay on Tower Rd. SW as it continues northeast into campus. You will see ample parking and a building marked “Ballantyne Auditorium.” (See map below)
From there, you will be inside Iowa Hall in an entrance area near an Information Desk and Coffee Shop. Head straight to a set of downward stairs, and take those stairs directly down to the Ballantyne Auditorium entrance on the right. Alternatively, there is an elevator near the Information Desk. Take the elevator down one floor to 1st Floor Iowa Hall and make your way through the atrium area to Ballantyne Auditorium (follow signs).

For patrons needing a break during the performance, a TV monitor is available in the lobby area outside the entrance to Ballantyne Auditorium for viewing the show in a quiet space.
