Description

Joy Clark is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and native New Orleanian who creates soulful original songs that celebrate peace and the undeniable power of love. Her intricate rhythms and warm melodies reveal a sweet vulnerability that has earned her critical acclaim and coveted performances around the world. Joy’s songcraft, paired with sophisticated progressions, and themes of freedom, love and self-acceptance gained her notice on the national folk and Americana scenes just a few years ago with appearances at Americanafest. She caught the attention of Grammy-winner Allison Russell and was offered a regular spot in her backing band The Rainbow Coalition, earning her the chance to jam with superstars Brandi Carlile and the Indigo Girls. She idolized artists like Margaret Becker and Jennifer Knapp, pausing VHS tapes to double check her chords against theirs as she unknowingly taught herself chord theory. Joy was drawn in by Becker’s honest work celebrating grace and mercy. Later, her sister would introduce her to some of her first secular influences—Tracy Chapman, Roberta Flack, and Chaka Khan. While her musical world expanded, her love for her childhood influences remained. A chance encounter at Mile of Music Festival would connect her to her childhood heroes Jennifer Knapp and Margaret Becker.

Rachael Kilgour

Canadian-American songwriter Rachael Kilgour presents her heartfelt new release, My Father Loved Me. The album was recorded in her late father’s native Ontario and was produced by JUNO-award winning and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Rose Cousins. In the spare and often gutting language for which she is known, Kilgour gives us a complex portrait of a man seen through his daughter’s eyes. The record poses questions about belonging, inheritance, and grief and triumphantly affirms the value of one ordinary working man’s life. On stage Kilgour expertly balances her poignant, literate songs with her quick wit, landing somewhere between a comedy special and a funeral. Listeners can expect to laugh, weep, and reflect on their own relationships with fatherhood, mortality and grief. Kilgour was the 2015 Grand Prize Winner of the NewSong Music Competition and a 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest Winner, and has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center and The Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Her oft-noted “unapologetic lyrics” (Rolling Stone) and “master crafted indie folk” sensibilities (Billboard) are on full display in this latest collection of delicately woven songs.
