Description

World Music Theme: Henkinen (Breath of Spirit)

Welcome to an enchanted evening of memorable world music. Every year Kathi Huhtaluhta and her band “World Winds,” brings a new and fresh outlook to music from around the globe. “World Winds” is composed of a diverse group of talented artists featuring electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, violin, modern drums, and Native American flute and drum.

This year Kathi and her group of eclectic musicians will showcase pieces from their upcoming studio recording called “Henkinen,” the Finnish term for “breath of spirit.” Along with several of Kathi’s own original compositions, music will be featured from Iceland, Hungary, and Galacia.

Joining Kathi on stage will be guitar virtuoso Christian Vincent, known for his classical Spanish and Flamenco guitar. Also featured will be Mustafa Kilchak and Huyseyim Salim Sen, renowned folk singers from the Turkish community of Tucson. Jerry Martin, Tucson musician extraordinaire, who has also been instrumental in bringing world class Folk music performances to the “Old Pueblo”, will be joining the group on electric guitar and mandolin. In addition, Jan Halvax hailing from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, will be on percussion and drums. Globe trotter and singing sensation Kali Lucey, a native Tucsonan, will be sharing traditional folks songs and joining Kathi Huhtaluhta for ethereal vocals and chants, as well as a “Galician” duet.

Kathi Huhtaluhta, singer/songwriter, has been performing in Tucson for many years as well as touring overseas and in Canada. She has performed in Finland on many occasions, while visiting family and spending time with the indigenous Sami people of Lapland. Kathi just recently participated in the “Riddu Riddu” festival, an annual international event in Norway that celebrates not only Sami culture, but all indigenous cultures. Kathi’s musical journey has also been influenced by her time living abroad in Spain as the daughter of a Naval attaché. It was during this time that her love of Flamenco music and dance was forged. A self-taught musician at an early age, Kathi learned to play guitar while singing and strumming along to her favorite Joni Mitchell songs.
