"This is a musical biography of Waylon Jennings, his family and friends as seen by me during the years of growing up. You might wonder why me since my last name is Whitfield. My story will explain that to you.

My Dad, Troy Wayne, or Tex as his friends called him, Wayne as his family called him, was brought up in the cotton fields of West Texas. During the Great Depression my great grandad Gus and his wife were cotton share croppers in West Texas. They had three sons, one named Albert and a daughter Fanny May. Albert and his wife along with their son Waylon, and his sister Fanny May with her son Wayne lived in my great grandfather’s house in Littlefield Texas. My father Wayne was 6 years older than Waylon and Waylon looked up to Wayne as a mentor. Wayne, unlike the rest of the family believed Waylon had talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music.

When I was a kid Waylon, now a teenager, moved in with us for a short while. I loved Waylon and he was like a big brother to me. He bought me my first cowboy hat and my first ice cream cone. I still love ice cream to this day.

From that time on, I had the pleasure of sharing with my Dad and Waylon their ups, their downs and a long series of moving, music and misbehaving. Waylon and Dad remained close friends until their passings, and I enjoy sharing the stories of two of the craziest men I’ve ever known."
