Director’s statement

I have always loved ghost hunting shows. The myths and stories of ‘orrible murder and tragic death are made near comical by some (inevitably white) (inevitably male) ‘professionals’ running around shouting “what was that?!” at the empty air. The dramatic music, the shoe-horned jump-scares, the looks of horror over squeaky floorboards all provide an endless source of enjoyment for me.

But why is it that the ancient ghosts of colonizers get all the attention? What about the ghosts of today? Where are they? And given all this high-tech ghost-hunting equipment on these shows, what’s stopping us from making contact?

That’s what this play is about - What happens when the ghost being investigated isn’t some long-dead specter of yore. When it’s someone you know. Someone you’ve loved. Someone you’ve lost. With the tantalizing idea of making contact with the dead dangling before you, how can you possibly learn to move on?

So I’m afraid, dear reader, that I’ve tricked you. And I can’t say that I’m sorry for it. A show called “Lesbian Ghost Hunters” should be funny, right? And it is, rest assured. But it’s so, so much more.

Enjoy.
