Let's get down to comics! In this online workshop, comics artist Madeleine Jubilee Saito will walk you through the basic steps of creating a poetry comic. Students will identify a short piece of text, draft some images that might accompany it, and create a two-panel poetic comic. You'll gain some high-level strategists for how poetry cartoonists combine words and images for different effects.
Students will leave the class having created a two-panel poetry comic, and have a framework for creating more poetry comics in future.
Madeleine Jubilee Saito is a cartoonist living on Duwamish land in South Seattle, Washington. She makes poetry comics and essays about the environment and the sacred. She was an inaugural artist-in-residence at On Being, and her poetry comics were recognized in Best American Comics 2019. Madeleine loves to swim in Lake Washington.
Students will need reliable internet access as well as a pencil and paper (and any other drawing tools you prefer). This class is recommended for students ages 16 and up.
