In this TWO SESSION class before Mother's Day, you will make your own custom frame to gift, fitting artwork up to 12"x12".
Learn how to cut mitered edges, create a rabbet, and cut your glass to size. Participants will use a variety of tools including the table saw, miter saw, and router table. This is a beginner-friendly project, so no experience is necessary; however, having taken Intro to Shop Tools or basic familiarity with a table/miter saw is recommended.
We'll be using a variety of reclaimed materials, but you're welcome to bring your own lumber/glass/plexi if you have a particular bit of decorative molding or stock you'd like to use. Participants should bring the artwork or photo they plan to frame (or a decoy of the same size and shape) to class.
Day 1 (Sunday May 4, 2-5pm): Pick out your materials, and then dimension and cut your pieces using the table and miter saw. Get hands on with the router to finish shaping your frame, then learn some simple joinery techniques, put your pieces together and glue-up for good measure.
Day 2 (Wednesday May 7, 6-9pm): Finish off your frame by cutting your glass to size, sanding down any imperfections, and applying hardware and finishing oil as desired. Insert your artwork and add backing, and you'll have a finished handmade gift for a mom in your life!
All ages (16+) welcome. If you'd like to take this class with a family member, you're welcome to do so - please purchase one ticket per finished project you'd like to complete.
Meet Your Instructor: If you've been around SPTL, you may recognize Michael as a regular in the shop. He often has a neat project underway and is excited to give back the mentorship he's received from hanging around the tool library!
