San Miguel PEN presents... Gerry Helferich and Teresa Nicholas

From Nonfiction to Truth: How Two Award-Winning Authors Moved from History and Memoir to Fiction and Poetry

In 2002, Gerry Helferich and Teresa Nicholas left 25-year careers in New York City book publishing and moved to San Miguel to write. Gerry published five well-received works of popular history (and presented some of them to PEN audiences); Teresa published two critically acclaimed memoirs. A few years ago, aiming to capture a broader type of “truth” in other genres, Teresa began working in poetry and the short story, while Gerry wrote and published Hot Time, a historical detective novel featuring Theodore Roosevelt. Join us to find out what inspired these two experienced professionals to make the change from nonfiction, the challenges and rewards of working in other genres, how they collaborate, and other aspects of their writing life—and hear them read from their current work.
