Passionate Gardening: From Garden to Table to Healthy Living in San Miguel
Running San Miguel’s popular garden-to-table restaurant Néctar is only part of Jim McKeever and Alfredo García-Lucio’s fascinating story. Not only does Jim’s passionate gardening produce the vegetables and edible flowers that satisfy both eyes and appetites at Néctar, but the dishes served there are honed in their own kitchen by these two accomplished cooks. Alfredo continues to master desserts and sourdough breads. Through teaching, Jim shares his knowledge of gardening, nutrition and healthy living. He also designs vegetable gardens in pots or plots, and the couple sells vegetables and culinary herbs at their two Camino Silvestre stores. San Miguel PEN Presents Winter Series will take place at Casa de La Cultura, located in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato—the perfect place for conversations of such profound importance.
About the Speakers
Jim McKeever and Alfredo García-Lucio started their US wholesale company PARASOL in 1997 in Denver, Colorado, manufacturing beautiful blown-glass hummingbird feeders in Mexico and exporting to the US and Canada. In 2008, they moved to San Miguel to export directly to their northern customers from their local warehouse. They opened their first Camino Silvestre store on Zacateros In 2010, and their second, at Correo 43, in 2012. In 2013, they opened Néctar as a teahouse in the Correo store’s beautiful patio. Néctar gradually evolved into a restaurant because Jim and Alfredo would bring their healthy, plant-based lunches to the space, and clients would tell the waiters, “I want what they’re having!”
