Defaming the Truth-Tellers: How Governments Use Criminal Defamation Laws to Prosecute and Imprison Writers
Around the world, governments are using penal codes to target, prosecute and imprison journalists. Through criminal charges of defamation, they prosecute reporters for doing their job: investigating and exposing wrongdoing by those in power. PEN International has called on governments to ensure that defamation is addressed only through civil lawsuits, whose penalties involve only money. In this exciting presentation, lawyer and San Miguel resident Suzanna Dworsky tells the stories of three frightening criminal defamation cases against journalists, showing in clear detail how governments abuse the law to undermine the power of the press.
