Course timetable (UK Time): Live Zoom sessions 13.00 -15.00 UK time (remember to check the times where you are) on 26, 27 November, 3, 4, 10, 11 December 2022
Course description: This course offers you an immersive experience of doing personal storytelling and drama activities which you can build into your teaching of teenagers, adults and children aged 10+
You will discover how to enable your learners to grow in confidence and fluency as speakers and listeners. These creative, engaging and playful activities stimulate language acquisition and development so that your learners can successfully use a greater range of language as they communicate more deeply and meaningfully.
The course will focus on learning about ourselves and each other by sharing personal anecdotes and life experiences wherever we are in this interconnected world and how to transfer and adapt your learning to your own teaching context.
Several of the activities you will experience are published in David’s chapter Personal and Creative Storytelling: Telling Our Stories in the free downloadable British Council book Creativity in the English Language Classroom https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/pub_F004_ELT_Creativity_FINAL_v2%20WEB.pdf and in David’s teacher resource book Spontaneous Speaking: Drama activities for confidence and fluency, DELTA Publishing https://www.deltapublishing.co.uk/fix_page.cfm?type=title&isbn=978-3-12-501606-4
Putting personal storytelling and drama at the heart of teaching humanises the learning experience and fosters a sharing community.
We will
• enjoy being spontaneous and playful with language
• focus on play, our most ancient and potent way of learning
• discover how to make opportunities for our learners to express themselves personally and creatively
• explore new perspectives offered by sharing our stories
• develop as creative teachers
By channelling our learners’ interests and creativity, we can make our classes memorable, motivating and fascinating learning events.
Synchronous live sessions: In each live session you will experience doing personal storytelling and drama activities and explore how to adapt and integrate them in your individual teaching contexts. You can share what you learn while doing the course and get supportive feedback from David, Tammy and other course participants.
One-to-one tutorial: You can meet David or Tammy for a one-to-one 15-minute tutorial in addition to the live sessions.
Asynchronous autonomous learning: Pre-live course, between live sessions and post live course there will be follow-up and preparation activities. These will include reflecting and responding personally to each session and learning from suggested written and video materials. What you choose to focus on will depend on your own teaching context, experience and interests.
What you will learn:
• how to bring personal storytelling and drama activities into your own teaching practice to engage the learners you work with
• a variety of creative and practical activities for starting lessons, giving meaningful input, providing practice opportunities and rounding off classes.
• how to support your learners as they develop as creative speakers and listeners, valuing what they bring to their learning and noticing what they need
• how to adapt activities and techniques for your own teaching context.
The course focuses on teaching groups, both in person and online. The ideas can be adapted for one-to-one teaching.
