"Silent Sky" tells the true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt and explores a woman's place in society during a time of immense scientific and heart-bound discoveries. With music and math bursting forth onstage, Henrietta and her female peers change the way we understand both the heavens and Earth.
On top of being female scientists in a field and time dominated by men, Henrietta Leavitt and Annie Cannon were both individuals with a hearing disability. Playwright Lauren Gunderson only mentions Henrietta’s deafness within the script, but it played a large role in each of the women’s lives. Our cast consists of several ASL speakers, as well as some with HOH (hard of hearing) family members who lived shortly after Henrietta and Annie. Though ASL was not widely used or officially recognized during the time Henrietta lived, these connections resonated deeply with our cast, and it influenced the development of their characters and mannerisms.
