Description

To have a beautiful, diverse and cost effective flower garden you ideally need to be able to start your own seeds. This way you can grow plants and flowers from across the world rather than just the ones available at your local nursery.

At Earthenry we start thousands of seeds each season to grow our large and uncommon range of flowers. We've spent years perfecting our seed starting schedule and yes... we've made lots of mistakes along the way! We know first hand how frustrating it can feel when you think you are doing everything right and those seeds just won't germinate!

In this comprehensive workshop we will share all our hard earned tips to save you time and money - so you can finally achieve success with starting seeds!

During this jam packed 2 hour workshop we will cover:

  • What seeds need to germinate.
  • The challenges of starting seeds in Tasmania's cool short season climate.
  • Starting seeds with heat and lights vs starting in the greenhouse.
  • How to interpret seed packets.
  • How temperature relates to the different seed types.
  • Our ideal seed starting recipe (and what not to use!).
  • Soil blocking vs seedling trays.
  • Direct sowing vs Transplants
  • Cold stratification and tricky seeds.
  • Growing on and hardening off.
  • Planting and post planting care.
  • How to correctly store your seeds.
  • Our top product recommendations.

We'll also sow a tray of seeds together and take a tour of the Earthenry seed starting shed and greenhouse.

This workshop is suitable for both beginner and novice growers and is applicable to flower, ornamental and vegetable seeds.

Each workshop participant will take home some of our favourite flower seeds to sow in spring, along with comprehensive digital notes from the workshop emailed to your inbox after the session (so you don't have to remember every single thing we covered!).

Hope you can join us for some seed starting fun!

Here at Earthenry we grow over 100 different varieties of gorgeous seasonal flowers all nestled amongst beautiful gardens to explore during our open season events (October to April). Located in Lower Snug we are only a 25 minute drive south of Hobart and 5 mins from the Bruny Island ferry terminal.

From January to March, when our flowers are at their peak, we open weekly for 'Pick Your Own Flowers' and picnics on the lawns. Our Friday night summer twilight sessions with food, drinks and music are our most popular!

You can also book into one of our inspiring creative floral workshops or learn how we grow our flowers by attending one of our practical farming workshops. Our community volunteer gardening program Garden + Gossip runs every Friday during the off-season and welcomes new members!
