Description

With painted fingernails, Sue Foley strokes, strums, shakes, and shimmies a six-string, unleashing a tone that doubles as her voice—loud, proud, and true. Unadulterated by pedals and multi-effects, her pure sound sparkles with intricate chord changes, whether on her signature pink paisley Fender Telecaster or her handmade Mexican flamenco guitar.

There’s a poet’s sense of the profound in her execution, rooted in powerhouse electric blues and soulful nylon-string acoustic playing, including Piedmont finger-picking and other traditional styles. Transparent bell sounds blend with grit on her 13 albums since her 1992 debut, Young Girl Blues.

Foley has garnered international attention and numerous accolades, including the 2024 Blues with a Feeling/Lifetime Achievement award at the Maple Blues Awards, the 2024 Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Female (her fourth consecutive win), a Juno Award, multiple Austin Music Awards, Blues Music Awards, and Trophées de Blues de France.

Occupying the upper echelons of her art form, Foley epitomizes the electrifying truth that women rock and have for a long time. “I grew up with strong female musical influences like Heart, Linda Ronstadt, and Chrissie Hynde. They taught me that talent and skills were more important than looks and fluff. Playing matters.”

Her latest recording, One Guitar Woman, is proof of this. The 12-track album pays tribute to pioneering female guitar players whose mastery continues to inspire Foley and push her into new artistic territory. These guitarists include Maybelle Carter, who invented the Carter scratch style that influenced legends like Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Godmother of Rock ’n’ Roll, whose electric guitar playing influenced Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Keith Richards.
