A queer coming-of-age fairytale.
written and performed by Jen Ponton
Fresh from its world premiere at the Denver Frindge Festival earlier this month, now making its NJ debut to close out Pride Month.
SUGARCOATED is an autobiographical late (late) coming-of-age story about me, Jen: a romantic daydreamer who absolutely should have known she was queer by the time she was 8 years old. Through stories both mortifying and hilarious, Jen takes the audience through the big 'almosts': her first kiss (a girl!), her first heartbreak (a boy who looked like a lesbian!), and her fervent love for Girl Scout Camp.
On the brink of coming out in college, Jen grapples with societal booby traps of womanhood and sexuality, shaving away bit by bit of her essence and knowing until she is a husk of her former self.
20 years later, only the catharsis of a global emergency can bring her crashing back to life, in full color--rediscovering herself, and finally experiencing the glitter, champagne bubbles, and sweet cake of queerness that she knew was inside her all along.
Content/Trigger Warnings for sexual assault, strong language, violence, and emotional abuse. Suggested ages 13+ with parental discretion.
Please Note:
- Tickets are general admission. House opens 30 minutes prior to each performance.
- Late Seating: Due to the small nature of our studio space, doors to the studio will close at showtime. Late seating may not be able to be accommodated, especially if you have not purchased your tickets ahead of time. If you are running late to a performance, please call or text us at (856) 441-0126 with your ETA and we will do our best to hold the house or otherwise prepare for your late arrival.
- Tickets are non-refundable but may be transferred to another performance of the same production if there is one. Simply contact the Box Office and if there are seats available, we will gladly move your tickets into another performance of the same production.
