PS21 NouveauCirque Gala! July 21, 2023
Please join us on Friday, July 21 for PS21's 2023 Nouveau Cirque Gala, with dinner under the big tent and a performance by the acclaimed Cirk La Putyka from the Czech Republic. The politically astute, inventive, rebellious circus troupe will present Runners, a visually stunning metaphor for the frantic pace of modern life, where four performers run, cavort, collide, writhe, somersault, ride bikes, and perform Cyr-wheel acrobatics on a giant treadmill with breathtaking skill and athleticism. Before the show you will enjoy cocktails and dinner prepared by Columbia County’s Josephine Proul, chef, owner of Local 111, and two-time Columbia County Best Chef award winner. All proceeds from the Gala will be used for the production of performances to draw the community together and maintain our breathtaking grounds and stunning theater.

Praised by The Guardian as “a moving exploration of time . . . through dance, music, acrobatics and dialogue” and an instant hit at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Runners is a stunning circus/dance masterpiece making its North American debut at PS21. Award winning company, Cirk La Putyka, presents a spellbinding show filled to the brim with enchanting dance, impressive acrobatics, and original live music, all set on a giant moving treadmill. From its inception contemporary circus has challenged genre boundaries and blended acrobatic physicality and athleticism with elements of theater, music, dance, new media, and the visual arts. Artistically-driven, politically astute, inventive, rebellious, and hybridized, contemporary circus is reinventing itself as a new multidisciplinary genre. It is an art form for our times: provisional and improvisatory, but with the potential for forging a sense of common purpose and embodying community.

The PS21 Nouveau Cirque Gala raises funds critical to PS21’s commitment to presenting the free community programs that attract new audiences and to supporting the artists who create and present bold, innovative works in our theater that are “an affirmation of the human spirit” (San Francisco Chronicle) and “at once challenging and inviting” (New York Times).
To ensure that performances at PS21 are accessible to everyone in our Hudson Valley community, we keep ticket prices low and offer generous discounts. As a result, ticket sales cover just 10 percent of our annual operating expenses, and we rely on the generosity of individual donors to make it possible to sustain this experiment in cultural inclusion. By supporting the Gala and urging your friends to join as well, you help us reach our goals, and in return enjoy the dynamic and innovative Cirk La Putyka in the poetic, natural landscape of our apple orchards.
