Description

Heard of the Bradford Toll Road, that was once the most direct route to the mining camps in the mountains?  Nope, it wasn't 285 but you can learn where it wound through our mountains, who built it and what it took to bring it to life. This event will occur at CHSM's Little White Schoolhouse museum.

Life was hard, transportation was slow, and the word ""terrible"" didn't even begin to describe the toll road that took intrepid travelers from Bradford City to high country placer mines.  The road started in a hopeful boom town called Bradford City (now Ken Caryl), wound through the Twin Forks area on 285 and went all the way to the high country.  Considered an ‘air line’ path, the route was vertical and treacherous in parts and touted saving travelers 18 miles!

Jamie Siebrase, longtime Denver journalist and author, will share her research and the insights that fueled her recent article on this Toll Road in Historically JeffCo magazine.

Mission

The Mission of the Conifer Historical Society and Museum is to share the region's legacy by collecting, preserving and exhibiting historical and cultural materials.

Background Statement

One day, a group of Conifer residents was sitting around the dinner table together and the topic of history came up. "Do you remember who used to live on that house way down on Kuester Road? What about that old Cemetery off Pleasant Park Road? Do you know anything about that?" And so the discussion went, and The Conifer Historical Society and Museum was born. Incorporated in January 2009, we have grown and now call the former Conifer Junction Schoolhouse our home. Our purpose now is to share the region's legacy by collecting, preserving and exhibiting historical and cultural materials and provide public access to services, collections, exhibits and a research library.
