Description

Immerse yourself in the rich history of Saratoga’s most iconic racing event at the Saratoga Springs History Museum on Thursday, Nov. 14, as acclaimed authors and racing historians Brien Bouyea and Michael Veitch present their latest book, The Travers: Saratoga’s Midsummer Derby, 1864 – 2023. Described by Thoroughbred Racing Commentary’s Charles Hayward as “the best racing book since Seabiscuit,” this meticulously researched and visually stunning coffee table book chronicles the first 154 editions of the Travers Stakes, America’s oldest thoroughbred race for 3-year-olds.

During this exclusive event, Bouyea and Veitch will delve into the colorful history of the Travers Stakes and its significance in both Saratoga Springs and American racing. They will share incredible stories from the book, like that of Thanksgiving, the miraculous 1938 Travers winner who survived being struck by lightning and was trained by Mary Hirsch, the first woman licensed by The Jockey Club. From the dramatic 100-1 upset of Jim Dandy in 1930 to Arrogate’s record-breaking run in 2016, these tales reflect the heart and soul of Saratoga racing and the resilience of this historic event, which has survived wars, economic crises, and even a global pandemic.

The Travers: Saratoga’s Midsummer Derby is more than just a collection of race results; it is an in-depth exploration of each year’s race and the stories that have made the Travers a national sporting treasure. The authors will discuss the origins of the Travers, the legendary horses and people who have shaped its legacy, and how this race has cemented Saratoga Springs' place in racing history.
