Want to be more aware of your city by looking closely at building names, street signs, wayfinding plaques, murals, ghost signs and architectural detail?
Join us for a free Type Walk of Historic Auburn Avenue in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood in Atlanta, GA. Led by Sue Youngblood on Saturday, November 9 from 10-11:30am this peripatetic exploration will navigate Atlanta’s significant past. Folks may discover the typographic and symbolic signage of one of Atlanta's most historically and culturally rich streetscapes while learning more about the glorious heritage and fascinating memory of Atlanta's Beloved Community through a fresh perspective.
Details about the event:
- When and Where to meet: We’ll meet by the Eternal Flame directly across from the MLK, Jr. and Coretta Scott King crypt in the reflecting pool at Martin Luther King, Jr. Center.
- Parking: Free Parking at the MLK, Jr. National Historic Visitor Center parking lot which is across the street from the meeting spot and accessed via 140 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30312.
- After: The walk will end at Constellations next to the APEX Museum.
135 Auburn Avenue NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30303 - Distance of the walk: approximately 1 mile
- Accessibility: This walk covers paved terrain and is wheelchair accessible in most cases.
- What to wear and bring: Wear comfortable walking shoes and protection from the sun. Consider bringing a bottle of water!
About The Walk Leader:
Type aficionado and Atlanta lover Sue Youngblood boasts having relatives continuously in Atlanta since before the Civil War, except for a brief period when Sherman was throwing matches.
With a professional background in experiential graphic design plus two decades of teaching typography and design classes, Sue shares a wealth of typographic knowledge and Atlanta history. Sue has held a myriad of positions over the span of her career including AIGA Atlanta since 2009 and as Principal Graphic Design consultant for Youngblood Design Studio from 1991 - 2004.
More about Auburn Avenue…
During the 1920s, Auburn Avenue was the commercial center of Black Atlanta. Fortune Magazine named it "The richest Negro street in America" in 1956. On this street John Wesley Dobbs, the "Mayor" of Sweet Auburn, conducted his business guiding the groundwork for causes of Black suffrage and equality. The helm of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Auburn Avenue and preached on the street, which is now home to The King Center, founded by Coretta Scott King.
