The Hinterlands creates performances and public events equal parts playful and surreal. From our original touring pieces to the events we curate in our Detroit neighborhood, our genre-defying work is built around pressing into the unknown areas of our personal and collective history with fearless physicality and a sense of humor. Founded in 2009 by Richard Newman and Liza Bielby, our work has been seen at venues including Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan), Flynn Center (Burlington), p! (NYC), Charlestown Working Theater (Boston), Co-Prosperity Sphere (Chicago), and internationally at the 2012 Shanghai Biennale, White Night (Chengdu), Teatri Dodona (Pristina), and the Berlinale among others. We have conducted numerous international collaborations, both in-person and digital, including Invisible Cities (Detroit/Chengdu/Shanghai), Breaking Bread (Kosovo) and The Enemy of My Enemy (Detroit/Beijing/Tehran/Moscow). We are members of the Consortium for Training and Place-Based Ensembles, the Arts, Culture, & Commons Working Group, and the Network of Ensemble Theatres. thehinterlands.org

The Hinterlands original performance Will You Miss Me? at Play House:
A haunting song echoing across the holler draws a traveler into a funeral service for one of many white workers who moved from Appalachia to Detroit in the last century. But this is no normal funeral and this is no ordinary corpse. Layering traditional Appalachian songs with family truths, pre-Christian mythology, brutal comedy, and rituals inherited and invented, Will You Miss Me? pushes audiences to examine the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and to grieve the selves that have been forgotten.
Will You Miss Me? is an original performance created and performed by The Hinterlands. This performance is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and a development residency at Double Edge Theatre.
Run time is approximately 75 minutes. Performance begins at 7:30PM.
All seats are general admission. This is an indoor performance. Masks are welcome, but not required. If you are immunocompromised or need/want to be at a fully-masked event, please email tickets@thehinterlands.org to attend our invited mask-required performance on Wednesday, 3/20.
