Join us for a Wine & Design evening with MODA experts, including MODA’s executive director, as we commemorate the 1945th anniversary of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.
While the eruption was catastrophic for the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, its long-term impact has deepened our understanding of ancient history and created a fertile landscape that has given rise to some of Italy’s most delectable culinary achievements.
As we sip wines from the region that are enriched by volcanic materials and offer a distinct flavor profile, we’ll stroll through MODA’s galleries and talk about:
- How the eruption of Vesuvius has impacted our understanding of the ancient past
- The making of pasta in the southern region of Italy, home to Mt. Vesuvius and the city of Gragnano, which became a capital of pasta making as early as the 17th and 18th centuries.
- The story of San Marzano tomatoes, known for their sweetness, low acidity, and firm flesh, all attributed to the volcanically enriched soil.
- Wines from the region, enriched by volcanic minerals, offering a distinct taste profile that reflects their terroir.
- Vesuvio, a contemporary pasta shaped like a plume of smoke from a volcano!
At the end of the evening, we’ll send you home with a box of Sfoglini’s Vesuvio pasta and some recommended sauces so you can continue to enjoy the flavors of the evening at home.
About Al Dente:
“Al Dente” explores the many ways in which the processes of making, cooking, and eating pasta serve as acts of design. It showcases an array of pasta shapes — each created to maximize flavor, texture, and nutritional value — and the tools used to make them. Also addressed are the impacts of industrialization on pasta design, pasta’s promotion to consumers through graphic arts, the future of pasta in our era of 3D and 4D printing, and contemporary efforts to create new pasta shapes.
