JOIN US TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A ROADMAP FOR

JOINT FUNDING AND COLLABORATION TO SUPPORT

XR IN DOD LVC TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

September 24-25, 2024

The use of extended reality in military training continues to grow as does the movement toward more realistic Live-Virtual-Constructive environments. Simultaneously, cross-service and joint training exercises are taking place more and more.   Yet there are gaps in true cross-service knowledge and collaboration for research, development, and deployment of these critical capabilities that enable our warfighters to train in an increasingly realistic environment.   Filling those gaps requires increased communication and funding.

In collaboration with Dr. Christopher Palmer, Principal Director for the Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) Critical Technology Area (CTA) in the Critical Technologies Office, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, the Central Florida Tech Grove is hosting a workshop engaging government, industry, and academia in dialogue and development of a roadmap towards increased funding to support more clearly defined, cross-service use of XR in LVC and better understanding of the human sciences behind it.

This important conversation will bring together a focused group of experts in the key capability areas relevant to Live-Virtual-Constructive military training environments and the use of Extended Reality.  There are a limited number of spots available for this initiative.  Priority will be given to those working in the primary capability areas directly relevant to the discussion.  Industry is invited to register up to two technical experts.  Defense and national security agencies are encouraged to send two Chief Technical Officers, Chief Scientists, Program Managers, or others leading relevant programs.  Academic institutions are invited to send faculty working in relevant areas.

Key relevant areas include augmented/virtual/mixed/extended reality, live-virtual-constructive environments, synthetic training environments, artificial intelligence & machine learning, instructional design, learning sciences, and cyber security in training and simulation.

Perspectives on the Current Landscape

Hear from key government and industry leaders in the LVC training space about their work and insights on where gaps and opportunities exist.  What is the current landscape? What are the key areas of need to continuously move toward optimization of more realistic training environments?

1. DOD Perspectives:

  • Dr. Chris Palmer, Principal Director for Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), Critical Technologies Office, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering
  • Dr. Heather Priest Walker, Senior Scientific Technical Manager, Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division

2. Industry Perspectives

  • Dr. Sandro Scielzo, Human Systems Technical Authority, CAE USA
  • Dr. Leah Rowe, Principal, Defense Mission Professional, Booz Allen Hamilton

A Roadmap for Collaboration and Funding

We'll share what came out of the working groups from the day before and map the route to more collaborative Cross-Service Warfighter Readiness Training integrating XR in LVC and where funding is needed to support it.

The Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) Critical Technology Area (CTA) in the Critical Technologies Office, Under the Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering focuses on technologies and human sciences to reduce attentional and cognitive loads while delivering data to decision-makers in relevant, prioritized contexts (e.g., mixed and augmented reality, etc.). The HMI CTA also focuses on advanced technologies that simplify control of complex military systems (e.g., Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Cyber and Joint All Domain Command and Control tools) through simplified, intuitive, natural, and decisive action (e.g., vocal, haptic, or brain-machine control). Together, these technologies and human sciences will enable Warfighter decision and action dominance, shorten the human-in/on-loop kill and survival chains in multi-domain operations, improve joint situational awareness and understanding, and provide immersive, distributed training approaches for improved joint warfighter outcomes.

As a multi-service funded DOD Innovation Center, the Central Florida Tech Grove focuses on growing the defense industrial base, transferring technologies, and finding innovative solutions for problems.   Tech Grove regularly brings together government, industry, and academia to connect, collaborate, and rapidly innovate solutions to some of the key challenges in defense human performance.
