CORAZON DEL BARRIO
2196 Logan AvenueTo describe Yeison Landero we must first loosen our shoulders and allow our hips to move to the original rhythm of his grandfather…Andres Landero… “El Rey de la Cumbia”. In this swinging sound lies a melodical repertoire led by accordion play, bird-mimicking gaitas, rumbling basses and tribal drumbeats. Landero’s cumbia is designed to replicate sounds of nature with such instrumental precision and a story-telling ability of folkloric heritage.
In Landero’s body of work we’ll find a legacy of 600+ cumbia tracks influenced by his early experience playing with the “Gaiteros of San Jacinto” in the Caribbean region of Colombia. His father himself was a “gaitero” and so Andres was always around music growing up. At the same time, he shared a colorful grass roots connection and admiration for the farmers’ life and its social struggle. However, his virtuosity to play the accordion became his signature, distinguishing himself from other vallenato performers of his time. Landero took his craft to another level by remaining Colombia’s most prolific composer, ultimately sharing his melodies all over the world. Such an authentic expression can’t be kept to one country only, even if that country is Colombia.
In Mexico, Landero found a second home. During his travels, Andres manifested love songs and musical notes that still reverberate back and forth between both nations. To better understand his melodical brilliancy, one must listen to songs like: “La Pava Congona”, “Mara del Carmen”, “Virgen de la Candelaria”, “Perdi las Abarcas”, “Cuando lo Negro sea bello”, “La Mexicana” and “Martha Cecilia” amongst others. Landero inspired musicians like Joe Strummer (“The Clash”), who during the peak of the 80’s punk scene immersed into Colombia’s buoyant cumbia scene and made friends with “El Rey de la Cumbia”. Celso Piña from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, a legend of his own, acknowledged Landero as his most influential inspiration to shape what is now known as “La Cumbia de Monterrey”. As such, Landero embodies like no other, the spirit of cumbia culture all over the world. Anybody with an authentic interest for cumbia must first take a deep dive into Landero’s original sounds. For context purposes one can agree that Bob Marley is to reggae, what Landero is to Cumbia.
Today, Yeison Landero proudly carries the musical torch and the ability to play accordion notes from the most prolific cumbiambero of them all. Born in San Jacinto (Bolivar) in the heart of Los Montes de Maria, Yeison received the musical legacy from his grandfather Andres and his beloved teacher, Maestro Adolfo Pacheco. Known as the “Heir to cumbia”, he is not only one of the greatest accordion players today, but a proud musician with a clear commitment to share the beauty of cumbia Colombiana.
Yeison Landero, represents a symbol of unity within cumbia artists delivering a joyous mystique just like his grandfather. With performances alongside Celso Pina and Ronda Bogota, Yeison has established his own style and a powerful stage presence organically sharing his love for all cumbia art expression. His latest presentation at Auditorio Nacional de Mexico along “El Golo de la Milenio” offers a sneak preview on how Yeison is taking this legacy to the next level, balancing his accordion virtuosity with cumbia’s top dance performers from Monterrey. A contagious candlelight of multi-disciplinary delight.
LA DIABLA
La Diabla emerges as a vibrant force in the dynamic transborder region straddling Tijuana and San Diego ushering a cumbia revolution since the dawn of millennia. Their compositions are a rebellion of emotions within the cumbia genre – from a potent and fierce energy to an amorous and jubilant exuberance, delving into the realms of shadows and the macabre. Their artistry is a harmonious collision of Andres Landero’s soul and N.W.A.’s audacity, adorned with enigmatic masks reminiscent of Daft Punk’s futuristic allure and La Sonora Dinamita’s mystique.
La Diabla’s discography boasts two compelling Eps, “La Receta/La Poderosa”, and the evocative “La Historia Sombria”, which is punctuated by a noteworthy collaboration with Camilo Lara of Instituto Mexicano del Sonido. Moreover, their sonic explorations resonate alongside luminaries such as El Kool Kyle of “Kiss” Cumbia Prince fame (Baylando Records), El Dusty, a maestro of “Mi Cumbia se respeta” (Cumbia Life/ Discos Peligrosa), and the visionary Panoptica Orchestra (formerly of Nortec Collective). Additionally, La Diabla’s creative spectrum encompasses harmonious liaisons with El Gran Silenciao, Los Siriguayos, and a constellation of other musical virtuosos.
La Diabla doesn’t merely play cumbia; they conjure a transgressive sonic tapestry, weaving together threads of tradition and innovation, conjuring a symphony that beckons all souls to the dance floor.
